IRC with External Clients (mIRC, ChatZilla and Trillian)

So you're tired of using that Java Client, huh? Go ahead, admit it. It's clunky
and has no features. If you're wondering what kind of features you can have in
IRC, then you should get mIRC, ChatZilla for the Mozilla Firefox browser, or
Trillian.

*NOTE: Before downloading and installing any programs to
your computer, be sure you have the permission of the owner. Of course, if you
own your own computer, this is easy. I do not endorse installing programs to
anyone's computer but your own.

Getting Started, mIRC

First, to get mIRC go here and click download mIRC. This will not
take long. Then install it by double clicking the exe that you downloaded.
Follow the on-screen prompts and finally, start mIRC.

A window will pop up telling you this is the 30 day evaluation period.
Technically you are supposed to register it after 30 days (and pay the money
for it) however, I will tell you that you can continue using it after 30 days
without any problems, if you do so choose. I'd suggest paying for it, though.

After that we get into mIRC. A window will pop up with a list of servers in it,
and it may start to automatically connect you to the server it has chosen, the
mIRC server. If you do not want to connect to the mIRC server, click ok on the
window, and then click the lightning bolt on the top left corner of the screen to disconnect. If
you didn't click ok on the first window, skip to the next paragraph. If you
did, then click File and then Select Server, or simply press Alt +E. Now click the add button on the right
side of the window, and another window will pop up with some fields in it.

Description: You can put what you like here to remind
you what the server is for. If you're like me, you have several IRC servers you can connect to.
IRC Server: This field should read irc.ogamenet.net and NOTHING ELSE.
Ports: This field should be left at it's
default, which is 6667.
Group: This field should be left blank.
Password: This field does not apply to our server,
as the server uses AuthServ, and the password function is designed for NickServ.
Now
click add, and you're finished with this part.

Almost there for mIRC. There are just a few short steps to
complete now. Now click the select button on the right side of the window, and you should come to another window. Here, enter your desired user name in the Nicknamefield, and then finally, click connect. If you are using more than one network, make sure the box New Server Window is checked.

If you are Registered as a user, to automatically input your password when you connect, you need to go toTools,Options, then click options in the menu on the left, and then click the perform button. In that field, enter the line /AuthServ Auth username password, where "password" is your registered password. Makes sure the Enable on Connect box is checked, and you should now be ready to chat. Simply type /join#nostale.uk and you can talk to everyone. You can also add this channel to your favorites, to easily connect toit next time.

Getting Started, ChatZilla

If you are using the Mozilla Firefox Web Browser, then you may like the plug-in for it called ChatZilla. To get this, simply click
here and click install now. A window will pop up and you should click install after it is no longer grayed out. You will have to restart your browser to use this.

Now, open firefox, and click on
tools and then ChatZilla to open it. It will automatically connect to the Mozilla IRC network. Disregard this for now.

You'll find ChatZilla easier to set up. Click on
ChatZilla, and then click preferences. This opens a preferences window. The only options there should be the network to which you are connected, and Global. We are going to click Global Settings right now. Now click the startup tab, and you should have two fields: Auto-load Scripts, and Auto-connect URLs. We are concerned with Auto-connect URLs.There is probably an entry in this field already. Unless you want to connect to the Mozilla IRC network every time you start your ChatZilla, you can delete this by clicking on it, and then clicking the delete button. Now click on the Add button, and a new window will pop up. This field should have irc://irc.ogamenet.net in it and NOTHING ELSE.

Now, click apply, and close ChatZilla. Open ChatZilla again like you did before, and now, ogamenet.net should be the only server opening (unless you have others installed, but if you do, why are you reading a tutorial?). If you don't have a password, then skip the next section.

If you do have a password, open the preferences again, and click on
irc.ogamenet.net, then click on Lists. In the first field, which is Auto-perform, click add, then type AuthServ Auth username password, with no slash in front (unlike the mIRC version), and where "password" is your password for the server. Now the next time you connect, it will automatically recognize you.

Now, you just need to type
/join #nostale.uk and you'll be ready to go. To allow the channel to open automatically, simply right click the #nostale.uk tab at the bottom, and click Open this channel at startup. You are now ready to begin chatting on ogamenet.net

Getting Started, Trillian

To start, download Trillian here. I did not purchase the "Pro version", so using the basic version should
be ok for you. Install Triallian by following the on screen prompts. If you have any trouble with it, contact the Trillian support, found on their homepage.

Once trillian is installed, and you have established any connections you wanted to establish, you'll need to enable IRC. Click on
Trillian, then click My Connections, and then Manage Connections. On the menu that comes up on the left side of the window, click on plugins.

Now, make sure the box next to IRC is checked, and go back to Identities and Connections.
Now, clickAdd a new connection, then select IRC from the drop down menu, and a new set of fields will open up.

Server Alias = ogamenet.net
irc.trillian.com::6667= The server address. This should read irc.ogamenet.net and NOTHING ELSE.
Nickname= This is your name as it will be displayed in the IRC.
Username
= This is the name that appears in your host name (you@host.domain)
User Info= This is the brief description that appears after your host name in your /whois info. [you@host.domain (userinfo)]

Now that you've got your information entered, click the connect button, and close the window. If your Trillian client isn't on your screen, click on the icon in your task bar (next to the clock) and it will open your Trillian interface. Highlight the blue orb on the interface and right click it, then
click
show status window. This will open a window. Maximize this window, and type /join #nostale.uk.

This concludes the Trillian Tutorial. Hope to see you on IRC.
