Nostale Guide (if you can't start Nostale and other problems)

Most problems can be solved if you do this:

Reinstall Nostale:
- Deinstall it
- There is always a folder on your hard drive left (By default: C:\Nostale(UK) ), delete it
- Download the client again
- Install the client
- Patch it

Change the Graphic options:

- Double-click the Nostale launcher
- At the left bottom side you can see the button "Option" - click it
- Change the graphics options, for example, from DirectX to OpenGL or vice versa

Turn off your antivirus before starting (Do this only as a last resort and only if nothing bellow this helps):
This is specific to the particular antivirus but most can be paused/stoped by doing this:
- Right click the antivirus icon and press Pause/Pause protection/Disable protection/Disable/Exit
- If thats not in the menu it can be found in the main window


Sadly some antiviruses give false alarms and might stop Nostale from launching or patching. Most non-free antiviruses don't trigger false alarms on Nostale but might ask if Nostale should be allowed to access the internet, click Allow
Remember to turn it back on after you finish playing!


Other Problems:


You can't download the client:

Problem:
If I click on the download link, there's a 404 Error instead of the client
Reason: Server problems
Solution: Check the board if someone has the same problem, if not, report the bug and wait until the Team replies to the post.

Problem 1: The download stops, or doesn't finish downloading the file and tells me that everything is okay
Problem 2: Message "The Setup files are corrupted. Please obtain a new copy of the program."
Problem 3: Message "Unable to copy the file: Data is broken (CRC - Check)"
Problem 4: Message "The Datas are broken"
Reason: This are in most cases bugs of the web browser or your internet connection
Solution 1: Try another browser or use a download manager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Download_manager)
Solution 2: Try downloading using the Torrent file, we recommend using BitTorrent or µTorrent

You can't install the client:

Problem: If I do a double-click on the installer my computer gets stuck/hangs/crashes
Reason: The installer is fairy large thus your antivirus might be taking its time while checking the files, also theres a known issue when opening large files in Vista.
Solution 1: Wait 15 minutes. Grab a coffee or some tea while you wait, read some news, do homework.
Solution 2: Restart the computer and deactivate your antivirus before you try installing Nostale, after you finish, don't forget to activate your antivirus.

You can't start Nostale:

Problem: Black screen after you started Nostale
Reason: There are problems with your video card drivers or your video card does not support DirectX9/OpenGL
Solution 1: Change graphics to OpenGL/DirectX9
Solution 2: Activate window mode
Solution 3: Update your video card drivers


Problem: NostaleX.dat wasn't able to find d3d9.dll
Reason: You don't have the newest version of DirectX
Solution: Download the DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer, run it and after it checks what version you have, it will download the updates for you.

Problem: NostaleX.dat/Nostale.dat found an error and has to be closed
Reason: There are problems with your video card drivers or your video card does not support DirectX9/OpenGL
Solution 1: Reinstall the drivers and/or change the graphic options (look at the top of this post!)
Solution 2: Reinstall Nostale (look at the top of this post!)


Problem: Nostale.exe found an error and has to be closed
Reason: Your antivirus might be tampering with the launcher.
Solution 1: Whitelist Nostale.exe and/or the whole Nostale(UK) folder (C:\Nostale(UK) by default)
Solution 2: Turn off your antivirus before launching Nostale and turn it back on after you are done playing.
Solution 3: Reinstall Nostale

Problem: I click on start in the patch window and it disappears but nothing happens
Reason 1:
There is missing data in the Nostale folder
Reason 2: Your antivirus might be tampering with the launcher or the game
Solution 1: Please check if the NostaleX.dat and the Nostale.dat are in your Nostale folder (C:\Nostale(UK) by default), if not, reinstall the client. If the data disappears again and again, it could be that your antivirus (Norton for example) is deleting the data if you patch the game, in that case, setup your antivirus to whitelist the folder Nostale resides in. (Search for FAQs and guides on the developers homepage and/or on their forums)
Solution 2: Please check your antivirus settings and see if it has Nostale blocked (In the blacklist and/or has been disallowed to start programs), in that case, unblock Nostale and add it to the whitelist

You can't patch the game:
First of all you need enough space on your hard drive, check this first (500MB or more!)
If you have enough space but Nostale complains that theres not enough space (Or anything else), please free up some more space and do a defragmentation on your C: drive or where you installed Nostale.

Problem: In the patch window I can't see the picture in the middle
Reason: The Firewall or your antivirus is blocking it
Solution: Setup your firewall and antivirus correctly (Internet Explorer needs to be able to connect to the internet, don't block it, even if you use Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome or other browsers)

Problem: The server doesn't have the needed patch data: http://dlcl.gfsrv.net/nostale/patch/uk/Update.txt
Reason 1: Maybe the patch server crashed
Reason 2: Maybe your antivirus is blocking the download.
Solution 1: Please check if someone already reported it on the board, if not do it and wait til it's possible to patch again
Solution 2: Try turning off your antivirus and see if it lets Nostale patch, if it does, then you will have to add Nostale to the antivirus whitelist, if not, try going to the link that the launcher tells in the error and see if its opening. If not, its probably Reason 1

Problem: Message: "Unable to check information, please try again later"
Reason: Maybe the patchserver is busy or your firewall is blocking it
Solution 1: Wait 10 minutes and try again, if it fails reboot your computer and try again.
Solution 2: Deactivate your firewall and test (if it's possible) if the firewall is deactivated, then try patching.
Solution 3: Setup your firewall and antivirus correctly (Internet Explorer needs to be able to connect to the internet, don't block it, even if you use Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome or other browsers)

Problem: Message: "Error while making/changing the patch"
Reason: Connection problems or you are running the launcher as a normal user.
Solution 1: Try again later.
Solution 2: Try starting Nostale as an Administrator
Solution 3: If you use WLAN/WiFi, try to get a better signal (Not too strong though) or use a cable.
Solution 4: Reinstall Nostale (look at the top of this post!)


That is not every possible problem, but just the beginning of a big problem solving FAQ. Other problems will be added with time.
I apologize for any mistakes in here, maybe some of you can correct it and send me a polished version via PM, so that I can post it (I'm not a native speaker xD)
